Meet Adele, a Bahamian Potcake, who was adopted last summer and was recently returned.  The reason she was brought back is her separation anxiety.  Separation anxiety often rears its ugly head in dogs who have been homeless.

A dog with separation anxiety will stress from the time their human leaves until they return.  The anxiety level ranges from mild to severe and can manifest itself in a variety of ways.  For some dogs it’s destruction and for others it can be howling, barking, panting, drooling, accidents in the house, scratching and digging at doors and windows, and pacing before you leave, while you are gone and when you arrive home.

While Adele was in her previous home, she was medicated.  At our Animatch Centre, she is not as there are other dogs and Volunteers who are in and out continuously.  No doubt another dog, to help with her shyness and anxiety might alleviate her fear.  It is possible that she may need to take medication for a certain period of time; this should be combined with desensitization.  There is no “magic pill” to just take it away.  Remember, no long goodbyes or over-the-top hellos.

Adele has had some obedience training and in order to continue to boost her confidence continued training would be recommended.  She is an active dog so daily exercise is a must.  Of course, a home where there is someone around a good part of the day would be perfect.  Adele requires the companionship of other dogs to help her with her anxiety.

So, Adele is on the lookout for an active family who will include her in a lot of their adventures and have the patience to help her work through this anxiety.  If we can find the right match for Adele, she promises to be your “good girl” forever.  Please fill in the Application Form if you are interested in adopting her.
