And good riddance! It was a challenging year for everyone including rescues. Animatch weathered the storm and although the start of 2022 is proving to be difficult, we must be optimistic that better days are ahead. In the same way that our dogs put one paw in front of the other and move forward, humans have to do the same.
Animatch would like to thank David Couillard, our amazing Webmaster, who gave us a new website in 2022 (some wonderful things did happen). We are all indebted to David who has donated so much time and expense over the years helping us stay current.
In 2021, Animatch received roughly 4,000 applications – a huge decrease from 2020 when we received 7,000. Although this was a more manageable number there were many disappointed applicants. Between 1,000-1,200 people were interviewed and 360 dogs were adopted. Many potential adopters remain on our waitlist; however, still a lot of disappointed people.
Out of the 360 adoptees, approximately 250-260 were Northern dogs (most from Whapmagoostui and Kuujjuarapik and some from Waskaganish, Chisasibi and a few other remote communities). Animatch also took in dogs from Mexico, Texas, Dominican Republic, Korea, and India. The remainder of the dogs were either owner surrenders or strays from animal control.
Animatch has a long waitlist for non-shedding, small, dogs; however, they are few and far between. Rather than surrendering dogs to a rescue, many people are selling them or passing them on to a friend or acquaintance. We hope for the dog’s sake that they are choosing wisely. We urge people to be patient and to check ALL rescues and if they do choose to “buy” -- investigate carefully. In addition to the existing puppy mills and backyard breeders, many unscrupulous people have found a “cash cow” in breeding small dogs Beware!
Our vet costs for 2021 amounted to $117,000 and for specialized services approximately $13,000. Animatch had some amazing fundraisers this year and we thank each and everyone who organized or participated. In fact, some of the dogs who needed some “extra” medical help are now living in their homes thanks to our amazing supporters. Shagster, Crumble, Delima, Sheldon, Eyelene, Knight, Phibie, Aiden, Casanova, Bali, Maize and Roots are all living their best lives – happy and pain free.
All of us here look forward to seeing more dogs finding their “happily ever after”. Adopt, don’t shop!
