A Great Dane Male named Scooby

Scooby is presently Adopted

My name is Scooby and I’m longing for someone to take me home ... forever this time.  I am a familiar face to Animatch; I was adopted in the spring of 2011.  Sadly, the child in the family has allergies.  Before that, my family loved me but unfortunately they were going through a divorce and could not keep me and my best buddy (who has already found his home).  My heart has been broken twice and my whole world has been turned upside down.  I am not so stressed this time because I recognize the friendly faces and know that everyone here only wants what is best for me.  Despite all that I have gone through, my spirit shines through.  I am now six years old which for a Great Dane means that I am nice and mellow.  Just because I am quiet does not mean that I do not need daily walks.  I need to use my muscles regularly to stay strong and healthy.  After a nice long walk, I am quite content to then go home and chill out with my guardian.  If you sit, I will lay my head in your lap in complete admiration.  My new family will like that I am calm and gentle.  I get along with other dogs, but my happiest moments are when I have the full attention of my human. I’m a great dog who is just waiting to get back to living in my own home.  I know that if you meet me, you won’t be able to help falling in love with me.  Is there room in your home and a place in your heart for a gentle giant like me?  Please fill in the Adoption Form if you can give me my furever home.

I think you’re right, Lily.  There were some mixes, like Buddy (Patchy) but no purebreds.  I surely would remember, because they have my preference.  Maybe because of their looks, many people think of them as dangerous dogs.  They often tell me: ” be careful with that kind of dog, even if you think you know him very well!”... And each and every one of them never had a GS in their lives!  I guess that makes them pros!... So they are just as any other breed, and each individual is different.  They are often misunderstood!  However, I now think that a “mix is the best” and has problably less health problems than the purebred.  Probably the next one…

Viviane, first let me tell you that your GSD is very pretty!!  You are so right about the breed, every one I’ve had has been an amazing dog, they’re just one of a kind!  Health problems will be why I would switch.  Right now we’re having the dreaded winter itch.  He’s on Atopica 200 mg/day…..$400+ a month!!

Well, thank you Edgar.  He is old now, but has always been tall and good looking!  I understand what you say about the vet bill: with Toscan’s pancreatic insufficiency, allergies, itchings, and now he needs anti-inflammatory meds, having more and more difficulty walking, mostly when he’s a little too active during the day… yesterday he played in the snow like he had forgotten his age.  In the evening, he almost fell down the stairs trying to climb them up!  He just could’nt stay on his 4 paws…  luckily, my husband always follows him close and could catch him.  Now I am going to buy some barriers to keep him from climbing the stairs without us.  He even has to go very slow when he sits.  Does Atopica work well for your dog?

Thanks for the info.  I might try some of that for his itching.  I’m confident he will be ok, we will try to keep him calm and have him rest a little…  We are used to all that.  He suffered a wiplash last summer and we rushed to the emergency, we thought he was almost dying since we could’nt touch him without making him cry… He is still funny and goofy, though! No age for that!  Lol…

We all have our preferences - I’m sold on berners! I wouldn’t even consider switching for a mixed breed (I’m a snob, I know!). I’m setting myself up for heartache because of the short lifespan and many health issues but their personality and quirks are impossible to resist. I may be a breed snob but my current and all of my future berners will always come from a shelter.

I also have a neurotic chocolate lab with SEVERE allergies. He is on vanectyl-p and it seems to control a lot of his symptoms. He still licks a LOT though ... which leads to a lot of gas! Gotta love ‘em!

vanectyl-p did absolutely nothing for Toby. Cortisone shots lasted 1 week or 2….....that’s why we went for Atopica, it helped a little but still itching,so we backed that up with predisone 20mg/day.  We haven’t had a hot spot or ear infection since:-)  Toby weighs 118 lbs, he’s a big boy! We did the food stuff too…...nothing!!  Always had GS, but now after so many problems with different GSD’s, I would get a mix.  Edgar is a mix, he’s 8 yrs old, goes to vet once a year for a check-up and shots:-)  LOVE that dog!!!:-)

Hi Megan,  it’s been a long time, or is it me?  How is you pack doing?  A friend of mine also has a thing for Bernese dogs!  At one time, she decided to get one, and when the day came, at the breeder’s, she could’nt decide between 2, so the took them both!  It was 8 years ago, unfortunately she lost her female almost 2 yrs ago, they never could find what she had, she kept having seizures, and apparently it was not epilepsy… Now, their male is all over them!  A big lovebug!  I have to admit, they’re beautiful…

Viviane, it has been a long time! I’m still around but work is keeping me super busy. I work at the Granby zoo, taking care of a whole different pack of animals wink

My trio is doing well. Riley is crazy as always, Mac is still a goof and Mya is slowing down a little more with her age (11, almost 12).

Having a berner is one of the best experiences but also one of the most painful. Luckily I haven’t experienced the pain part yet but with the connection I have with this boy ... it definitely won’t be easy. BUT, let’s not talk about that! He is still young and healthy smile

I guess the smell was tempting, and it was “buffet time”!  (Really, Edgar, you’re right!  Disgusting!)  You guys, having 2, you also must have a ball!  =)  So with his size, Scooby can probably become Scoopy!

There are days that it is worse - especially when I read of all those beautiful furbabies being given away for such minor reasons… no time after 2 - 3 and 4 years - not housetrained - too much shedding they seem so small of a reason to give them away….. where is the love ? wasn’t there any bonding to their furbabies ?  I consider my furbabies part of our family - would I have given one of my sons away because I had 3 ???
Sorry.. just my mood this evening, I don’t want to preach..
Like myself, some fortunate family adopts these unwanted furbabies - I am looking at Kody rite now and I thank my lucky stars that he was brought to Animatch - brought TO US…. imagine my little man feeling sad - unwanted - unloved .... fearful .... NEVER AGAIN, HE’S HOME .... whatever life throws at us via Kody, we shall handle it with kindness - love and devotion to our furbaby.

    Hello all,

I have just filled out an application for this big guy.  Hopefully it works out! I’ve always loved huge dogs and I think we would be a good match for this gentle giant.  We are a bit hesitent though because he is already 6 years old and their life expectancy is between 7 and 10 years of age.  I do know there are always exceptions to every rule, but it would be hard on us if we had him for only a year or so.

Cross your fingers everyone that it works out with this pup smile

Hi Kristina:  To begin with, I wish you luck and I can assure you lots of us followers will be crossing everything that we can cross wink
As for the life expectancy well, there are no guarantees in life… being a big guy or a little guy… We adopted a healty little Yorkie girl in 2009 ( her pic is next to my name ) she was 5 years old at adoption time…. our little one died on Dec 7 / 11…. of renal defiency,  You just have to take chances in life…. if you would ask me today knowing what I do ; if I would adopt Camy all over again ...my answer would be YES. I had the joy of walking thru life with and loving this little one for almost 3 years - would I change that no way…. better to love and hurt at our loss than never knowing how much this little one could love us and make our days brighter.
Scooby has lots to offer to his special family - being for a short time or a long time; at least his family will experience the love this kind giant of a furbaby has to offer.

I adopted Edgar a little over 6 years ago.  At that time I think Animatch was very new and the process went pretty fast.  I called about him, made an appointment, went and met him and we went home.  They now have a process they go through, which is a very good idea since they match the dogs and people and try to make sure they are a perfect match.  Hopefully you will hear from them soon and you can have this big cuddle bug all snuggled up to you for the rest of the winter.

Hi Kristina!  I also wish you good luck for the match.  And like the others, I think that every case is different concerning life expectancy.  And if you reed further up, you will see a comment from Sherri, saying that her friend’s Dane died at 15!  My german shepherd was ill and was due to be euthanized at age 2, litterally dying from hunger ...  Tried different treatments and he’s going to turn 10 this summer!  So Lily said it :  we cross fingers and everything for you!

I just want to say that Scooby is the sweetest dog.  He is gentle, playful, affectionate and all around adorable.  He loves stuffies (especially ones that sqeak) and hard rubber toys that sqeak.
He adores children too.  He loves a cozy place to sleep (like a couch if possible) or a soft doggie bed.
He is also very social and loves other dogs.
As far as how long Danes live, like others have said, you never can tell.
He is in wonderful health and as far as Danes go, he is not massive.  He weighs approximately 100-110lbs.
He is a perfect dog and deserves a fabulous furever home.

I don’t know how he is with cats, but with other dogs and birds, he is fabulous.  I would say that he would probably be fine with them.  He really is very gentle.
The rectangular doggie beds at Costco are perfect and they are very reasonably priced (about 22.00).  Or a nice cozy blanket on the couch would suit him as well!

Someone please do right by this guy.  Divorce??
3 times?? Man, people need to understand dogs are not accessories to their life   Sorry for the rant but c’mon people if you will give away a dog because of your love life?  Please leave them at animatch so the real dog lovers will have a chance at doing the right thing. If I got divorced, I’d give her the house to keep the dogs… You can always make more money

Divorce can make your life very difficult; even those “real dog lovers” may feel too much to take care of a dog in a life crisis. They might feel depressed or burnt out and no longer feel confident to take care of anyone or anything for the time. Life does not go always the “right” way.. Let’s not judge the situation or the people, what is important here I think is focusing on being with Scooby in his journey to find his furever home.

Definitely not suitable with cats and will not be put in a home with cats; unfortunately, a few good homes have applied but they have cats.

As far as giving up a dog because of a divorce, etc., we don’t judge; however, are a bit jaded since most of the dogs that are given up (with exception of a few cases that we see) were not given up because the person was not capable of taking care of the dog.

Hope that Scooby finds his home soon but in the meantime, he has laid claim to a bed and is very happy and content to watch the action!

Joanne, I can’t praise you and all the other people at Animatch for the work you do!!!!  These dogs are sooo very lucky to have people like you looking out for them!!!!  Can you imagine what would happen, not only to Scooby but to all the other dogs, without the devotion and love your group shows on a daily basis.  I know you will find Scooby just the right home.  I’m keeping my fingers crossed for him cause I really don’t want to buy a herd of cows and make a cow costume grin

Kurta, you are very sweet to have worried about Balou but let me assure you he was in very good hands with one of Rosie’s most experienced fosters.  Now he is reserved and it is looking good with his new family.  Good hearts like yours is what this world needs more of…

To all of you who have shown so many caring thoughts for Scooby we just want you all to know he is doing wonderfully at his new home in Vermont.  He was a little distant for the first couple of days but now he has really come to life.  He won’t let my wife out of his sight (of course she hasn’t let him out of hers either!).  We are absolutely stricken by him.

I can’t tell you how unbelievably happy I am to hear this!
He is such a great dog.  He LOVES squeaky toys; the new Kongs that squeak and hard rubber toys that squeak and stuffies that squeak!  He is very entertained by them and it’s also very entertaining to watch him.
He loves big scratches just under his ears too.  I used to do it with my knuckles and he LOVED it.
Please please keep updates coming.  I love that dog so much.  So happy to know he is being loved.
