Kella is another dog who hails from the North.  Kella is one very happy girl – that is a smile that you see on her face!  She desperately wants to learn the joy of riding in cars, hiking in the bush, and living in a house…  She’s very athletic and active, and is fond of long walks.  Kella is just learning the art of walking on leash and would benefit greatly from obedience training classes.  She will absolutely love spending the time with her human.  She also adores endless games of fetch—your arm will wear out long before she does! She’s not always on the go, though – Kella enjoys cuddling and scratches and gives little kisses in return. This friendly girl has never met a stranger and does tend to greet people over enthusiastically by using them as a springboard.  Kella anxiously awaits her first experience at living in a home.  Please fill in the Adoption Form if you would like to adopt Kella.

Just viewed the video, it was sad, informative, heartwarming and most of all inspiring…. These dogs, rescue workers and even the community will stay with me.  Kella and Simone you both really have an amazing story, if only you could talk…still there are still so many of your brothers and sisters left behind.  And this is only one story and there are so many more…..I will continue to do my small part as well as spreading the word. Hope the New Year brings all these wonderful dogs their furever home. Hugs…

I too viewed the video:  thumbs up to all those great human beings.  If people were a fraction as concerned and dedicated as these teams, starting with everyone in their home, there would be no pet overpopulation problem.  As for the puppy mills,  I strongly believe that there should be a strict law forcing all breeders to obtain a licence.  No licence (implying being checked once in a while), no selling.  You have puppies without a licence?  Give them to adoption…  I am quite sure that most people would have their pets spayed or neutered, and that would solve the problem of Pet Shops…  But that, of course, is utopian…Hope these girls find a loving furever home soon.

Could I walk two big yellow dogs without getting tied in knots? OMG, would I even need a bigger bed (or have to move my hubby out?!! ha ha). Kella looks so lovely that I am continually tempted!! grin

I have a few questions… I’m what may be called a seasoned pro of the rescue world. What I would like to know about Kella is…
    Is she housetrained?
Does she suffer from separation anxiety?
    Thanks for posting an answer!

    Oups… Forgot this:
By “Not cat friendly”, do you mean she will EAT the cat, or hasn’t been trained to know how to be around cats?
    Thanks again.

Sheryl Anne:  Although we expect all our potential adopters to expect to do some level of toilet training, for our large dogs, toilet training is rarely an issue.  We have found that most of our Northern dogs are somewhat prey driven (many have spent the first year or years of their life roaming in the outdoors) and we do not trust them with cats.

When you say that she is not cat friendly what do you mean? I have two cats who are incredibly friendly and loving. We have had a Golden Retriever before ( she passed ) and she was friends with them, they would play, cuddle and eat together. We also have a Chihuahua and they all got along. I’m asking because my family is extremely interested in Kella. smile

I dunno because I am not an Animatch volunteer, but I am guessing that if Kella is deemed cat-UNfriendly by the good folks at the center, there is most likely a darn good reason. Probably that whole PREY DRIVE thing, and I think, she will probably not want to “eat together” as you stated your previous pets did…but maybe EAT THEM CATS for dinner! ...I am thinking….maybe….but what do I know?

Dawn:  Debbie is right.  It’s not your cats that we are worried about; they may very well be super with dogs (and we have many dogs that are great with cats).  When we indicate “no” for cats, it’s because we are thinking of the safety and well being of your cats.  The northern dogs especially seem to have a high prey drive ... good chance they hunted squirrels, mice, etc. when they were in the north—either for something to do or for food.  We are NOT going to take a chance with a cat.

The Northern dogs who are ‘unclaimed’ are not fed in the native communities. They are left outside to fend for themselves and survive by eating garbage, mice, etc. Because there are no vets to do spay and neuter, there are many unwanted litters. Despite a rough start, they are all super affectionate and gentle with people. But I think a cat might be at risk.

Wouldn’t proper training and on-going re-education (combined with plenty of physical activity) overcome such behaviour?
I’m thinking they could and would. Then again… I have extraordinary patience with my pets.

Kella is so adorable in her training videos!  So very happy to work, loves to play and really wants to please.  She could be such a great running companion for someone - who needs weight watchers when you have a dog like Kella?! LOL The videos really give you a good sense of her personality and they are a great idea.  The folks at Auberge Zen are amazing!

Sheryl-Anne: Animatch has a resident cat that lives next door so the volunteers must have insight into Kella’s behaviour with cats.  I think the Animatch volunteers are right to err on the side of caution.  I’d be so mad if a dog I just adopted chased and killed my cat, even if it was just by accident.  Worse, it would be a terrible thing for the dog, because having had the chance to act out their prey drive and be successful, makes it so much harder for them to ignore their prey drive in future.

My animals eat separably, the cats eat downstairs and our dog eats upstairs so that they don’t steal each other’s food. Though since she has lived outside for most of her life, finding what she could to eat ( and I’m not even going to ignore it, she probably has hunted cats ), I can see why it could bring up potential problems to adopt her. Thanks for the information!
