A Shepherd-X Male named Gomez

Gomez is presently Adopted

Who let the dogs out?  Doesn’t really matter because they didn’t let me back in!

My name is Gomez and I am a pound dog.  Yup, another unclaimed treasure ... that’s me.  The good people around here figure that I’m about 7 years old.  A little grey around the muzzle makes me look distinguished.  I know, I know…. puppies are a barrel of laughs and cute as the dickens.  But, remember the wise old saying, “Age before beauty.” Just because an adult dog is no longer young doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a world of things to offer you. Folks sometimes have the mistaken notion that if you don’t raise a dog from scratch, you’ll only have trouble. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are definite advantages to the older dog. For one thing, I’ll be more than happy to let you finish your second cup of coffee in the morning before you have to take me for a walk.  Keeping up with a puppy can be exhausting—and you can’t turn him off or send him to his room to play if you’ve had a hard day.  Far more so than with a puppy, an adult dog is a “what you see is what you get” proposition.  One last thought about the “second-hand” dog.  A dog of any age can be trained and will adapt to—and be a loving, loyal companion for—a new family. You really can teach old dog new tricks!  So, take a second look at me, we just might be meant for each other.  Please fill in the adoption form if you would like to adopt me.  Remember, the name is GOMEZ

Love this little guy! I will repeat the message above about older dogs - they are the greatest. My 9 year old lab just seems to improve with age - we adopted him as an adult, and had no idea of his prior life, but he’s just continued to learn new things, and to teach us too!

Older dogs need love too! If you are looking for a snuggle bug, one who is happy just to be with his pack, an older dog is the way to go!

Croyez-vous qu’il aimerait encore jouer avec une doberman qui a trop d’énergie? J’ai aussi un deuxième chien qui est bcp plus relaxe. Il serait bien avec plusieurs chiens?

We have submitted an application of adoption for Scooby, but we also would love to take Gomez.  He seems like such a good dog.  I wonder how he reacts with cats because we have 2 cats at home.  Hope he gets a good home!

Sweet Gomez, you are such a cutie.  You score big time with me buddy!!!!  Have adopted three “mature” dogs and do not regret it for a minute.  Two of them actually learned English at 6 and 7 yrs old respectively.

Gomez, some lucky family is going to see you for the gem that you are really soon!

Gomez!  Why are you still here?  I thought you would find a home in no time.  I just love your face and soft eyes!  My soft spot for shepherds, I guess!  Kristina, since Scooby was not a match with your cats, did you have news regarding Gomez’ interest in them?  Let us know!

Gomez, may have a little gray but he is far from a senior dog.  He loves going for walks and is not showing any signs of age.  He is sweet, affectionate and clean.

There seems to be a “clump” of doggies who are not moving forward. Where are all the suitable potential guardians hiding? Those of us who WISH we could adopt this one or that one, but cannot at this time, for various reasons, spend our time looking at these beautiful, availlable adoptees, with sighs of frustration and sometimes discouragement.  Sure hope these precious furbabies find loving, forever homes real soon!

Right, Debbie!  I WISH I could adopt Gomez,.... or Reilly,... or Alfie… and why not,  PUP DADDY, or course!  but ... sigh…. My hubby once asked me, if I lost him, would I get another man… I said “No.  I’ll move up north to have some land… and get a bunch of dogs!!!”

I met Gomez in the woods today!!!!  OMG his fur is so soft!  He is the sweetest little guy…having a ball with all the other dogs.  Listens well and is very playful.  I don’t understand why he has not been snapped up yet.  He has puppy energy on his walks.  There must be a lucky family out there that is going to make his furever home wonderful!!!  The pics and bio do not do him justice…you will fall in love if you meet him…I promise!!!!

Unfortunately, not a lot of snapping up going on right now.  Until everyone has their dogs spayed/neutered, people stop buying from the internet/pet shops, and people only ADOPT, dog will be waiting for homes.  In the meantime, Gomez is lucky enough to be with our fabulous foster Mom, Sherry S., so he’s enjoying life!

Wouldn’t it be nice if even reputable breeders stopped breeding for a few years .... just until the day that all dogs have homes and no lives are being lost because there are no omes for them!

Gomez is beautiful. We are having trouble adopting a dog because we don’t have a fence (big yard -would cost 8-15 thousand dollars to fence it and we aren’t home during the day. Seems to be a problem. I’m sure there are people who have dogs AND work!! There are so many dogs that I would love to adopt but we have been turned down so often that I am about to give up.

Dawn:  Apart from dogs that have a history of straying or running away and of course the hounds (i.e. Beagles, etc), many dogs can live very nicely without a fenced yard.  Lots of walks and outdoor time with their guardian is just as important.  We prefer seeing a dog going for a 30-minute walk than seeing a dog left in a yard all alone for hours—bored and unhappy!  Dogs don’t amuse themselves.  So don’t let the fenced yard stop you from trying to adopt.

As far as a dog being alone all day—that is a bit trickier.  Very difficult for a rescue to judge how a dog will react being alone all day—definitely puppies and adolescent dogs are not candidates for that lifestyle.  However, a mature dog might be able to learn how to spend the day alone.  Ideally, it would be nice to have someone (dog walker, neighbour, etc.) to let the dog out mid-day, at least for the first few weeks or months.  Also, dogs who are alone all day must get exercised BEFORE you go to work—a good 30 minute walk is important.  And of course another good walk when you get home.  Good exercise for the guardian too!

It will take more time to find the right dog for your lifestyle but be patient.

Thanks Lily & Vivaine for your kind words. Our decision was truly heartbreaking but we feel that we did what was best for Hugo. The vet said that if WE were not ready he would put Hugo on pain killers.( the Rimadyl just wasn’t keeping him comfortable anymore.) but that his mobilty would continue to deteriorate. Hugo so loved to run and out of respect for that we gave him the chance to now chase squirrels in heaven!
