A Miniature Poodle Male named Choupi

Choupi is presently Adopted
SPECIAL NEWS RELEASE FROM CHOUPI: I have a home, my very own home!
UPDATE: Choupi here and it has been way too long since my last update. I’ve been quite busy doing the Meet & Greet circuit—every Saturday I’m out there with a smile on my face but I haven’t had any luck yet. The Volunteers can’t figure it out since they think I’m such a sweet and lovable guy. I have worked really hard doing my exercises so that I would regain use of my leg; everyone told me that would make me more adoptable. And I am now walking on ALL FOUR LEGS, at least 90% of the time. I’ve been at the Centre for over 6 months and I know it’s a nice place but it’s not home and that’s what I need a furever home. If it’s my age that worries you, Miniature Poodles have longevity—we can easily live until 16-17 or even longer! That would give us lots of time together. Please take another look at me. I may not be able to compete with the cute, bubbly, little puppies but at least I know all the ropes and won’t be chewing up your shoes when you are not looking. If you need a friend, I could definitely use one too. So, let’s make it happen!
Update: Choupi underwent surgery on his leg about two weeks ago and continues to improve daily. Because he did not use his broken leg for quite some time before surgery he seems quite tentative to put any weight on it. Choupi is not in any pain and although he may not regain full use of his leg, he gets where he wants to go and is a dog with a very sweet nature. Choupi would be only too happy to continue his recuperation in his very own home with all the love and TLC that he so deserves.
Choupi is a 7-year-old, Miniature Poodle who has had a run of bad luck. Choupi was hit by a car that was backing up and suffered a dislocated hip. His family took him to the Vet but unfortunately could not afford the cost of the surgery. One look at Choupi’s soft brown eyes which seemed to be asking for our help is all it took. Animatch has taken over Choupi‘s care and this friendly fellow will undergo surgery to repair his hip. He will heal and move on with his life – that’s what dogs do!
Can’t adopt but you would like to help Choupi in his journey? Please consider making a donation for this deserving dog’s surgery. We depend on public support to continue helping dogs like Choupi have a chance at a normal life.

I don’t know the family’s financial circumstances BUT when you purchase a furbaby or adopt a furbaby; like us humans, they will have accidents, they will get sick and they will need our help to get better…........ IT’S PART OF LIFE….. I make sure I have a little set aside each month just in case ... there is no way I would part with any of my furbabies because of the cost of treatment. A family vet will take monthly payments when the cost of treatment is high. So sad for both the family and the dog that lost his family due to circumstances beyond his control.
Poor little fella…and thank you Animatch!
My previous dog had hip displesia and had to have surgery on one hip. Of course, after the surgery he would not put his leg down . My vet’s intructions were to walk him on a very short leash VERY SLOWLY. His explanation was that a dog, if walking fast, will balance himself with the tail avoiding putting the injured leg down. But, by walking him slowly he would not be able to keep his balance resulting in him putting the leg down. The walks had to be short but many times a day. It took so time but it worked! He regained full use of his leg.
Thanks, Ginette. Good suggestion we will give it a try.
How is he holding up?
Choupi is doing very well, although not using his hind leg as much as he should. He would need more one-on-one but in general his spirits are good and he is an amazing little dog. Choupi is a quiet little guy who is just looking for his own little corner. He gets along well with dogs and cats. He has found his voice in the past week or so.
This is an awsome little fellow. I had the priviledge to have him with me at the Meet & Greet at Anizone last weekend. He is an amazing little dog, very quiet. The family who will adopt him will be blessed to have this little furry soul under their wings. He will be able to use his hind leg one day, it’s just a metter of time. He’s a strong little boy and he will find his family soon.
I exercise Choupi three times a week in a warm bath. He is improving bit by bit. He is a very sweet little fellow and I hope he will find a good home, I will miss him when he goes.
I understand that the family could not pay for the surgery.. but the fact that they were willing to give him up so that he could get better and be happy really does show that they love him sooo much! We have a 7 year old dog who we love unconditionally.. and he was actually dognapped from us.. but we luckily got him back after 2 torturous days with out him. Animatch, you are doing a great thing by helping this beautiful doggy.. but I really think that the best place for him to go is back with his family who made the most heartbreakingly generous sacrifice for him. Please return him.. Even though they are financially unstable, they seem much richer than most people in regards to LOVE!
Not many people would do what they have done for Choupi..
Serena, what you are doing with Choupi is really good for his rehabilitation. Since we have a waterfront, my vet had suggested to let my dog swim in the lake (see my post september 22). Only one problem in my case however…. he HATED the water!!!!!! The slow walks on a short leash worked but it did take approx. 6 months. Keep up the good work!
I am very proud to say that I finally made Choupi walk on his hind legs in the bath, he slowly walked on his hind legs the length of the bath. I was holding up his front legs high up in a way to give him no choice but to use both hind legs. I guess it’s his Christmas for me
On top of the all the kisses he gives me :o) Whomever adopts this little dude will get a very affectionate companion!!
What a little trooper! Thanks for posting his progress and for your patience too. I hope he gets a nice home soon, you can see how sweet he is by his eyes.
I saw him straighten his leg yesterday; I was very surprised. Choupi is a doll; he will improve much faster in his furever home.
Every time I visit your sight, i m near tears of joy with the amazing things you do for them! I wanted to adopt Ariel 1.5yr.(little long haired dachshund) in dec.but found a German Shepherd going on 6yrs.that I knew wouldn t ever get adopted, so I saved his life…he thanks me every day. I send my love to Ariel, wherever she may be <3 & God Bless for your work!! Thank you!
Choupi is progressing more every time I work with him…he works hard to get some muscles back in his previously injured leg. He stands on all four very proudly when he’s out of his aqua therapy!! I make him walk very slowly back and forth in the bath on his hind legs only. I took advice from Ginette and Maria and I decided to work on muscle building and it seems to work very well, he’s responding much better to this technique! Thank you ladies!
What a sweetie. I fostered a Golden Retriever for a year through 2 hip surgeries and a lot of therapy. It is amazing how resilient dogs are.
How about filming a little video of Choupi playing with the other doggies?
Christiane, it probably wouldn’t be an award winning video because Choupi does not really play with other dogs. He gets along with other dogs but he is a really gentle soul who prefers to watch the action from the sidelines. Choupi will be an excellent dog for people who want a quiet, reserved, dog.
Fingers crossed…sending best wishes your way!
Choupi has been all groomed by our super Volunteer Groomer, Debbie D. Hope he meets his match at the Bark ‘n Brunch.
Not sure if Choupi met his match today but he did walk around the Bark ‘n Brunch on four legs!!!! Way to go, Choupi. Thanks to Serina.
I have been following this dog’s story intently, would adopt him if I could. However I already have an adorable 9yr old rescue male poodle at home (who is Choupi’s twin) I loooooooove Poodles but two would be too much for me now.
I hope he progresses well and quickly and finds his forever home soon.
My good wishes to you
I totally agree with Jessica who posted a comment on Dec.03 2010 and Camy’s Mom (Sept.05 2010) should have a little more compassion for Choupi’s first owners. It must be nice to be so self righteous.
Good luck, Choupi!
I understand completly the family who gave away Choupi! I agree with you all when you say that whenever you adopt a pet, you have to provide for everything. We all know that it costs a lot… The shots, the food, and sometimes… bad accidents! My story is unreal! I adopted a dog from an other family who didn’t have the time anymore for Cali (a six months old Goldendoodle) October 24th 2010. 5 days later, she broke her leg so badly that she had to go under surgery at St-Hyacinthe… Imagine…5 days later… It cost me all in all about 4 000$ since I got her 4 months ago!!! She’s doing better now and I love her more then anything, BUT I’m broke. I had to borrow money from my parents…
Now, if I had to make the same decision today… let me tell you that I would probably not do it again… So, Choupi’s family really loved him! We shouldn’t judge them, they probably did the best they could. Good luck Choupi!
Thanks for the newer photos…I just love that poodle face, he looks beautiful. It’s gonna be a busy day on Saturday, good luck Mr. Choupi!
Christiane, I sense a soft spot for Mr. Choupi!!!!
Choupi’s eyes seem to tear alot. My dog Lexi (Animatch adoptee 2006
) has this problem a couple of times a year. Asked the vet what can be done and he told me that it was probably allergies and/or a mild case of dry eye. He recommended polysporin cream for the eyes and bingo! once a day for 4 or 5 days and it is cleared up. Maybe this could help Choupi?
I do Joanne! We have 2 poodles @ home (you may remember Belle from June 2007) and I think that there is always room for just one more. Let’s see till after this event.
I definitely remember Belle. Choupi is such a sweet dog; no idea why it is taking so long. Unfortunately, supply now far outweighs demand. It is taking much longer for dogs to be adopted.
andrea; My shih tzu’s eyes tear also and he ends up smelling like a wet dishrag! is it polysporin for people that you use? And cream, not ointment? How do you apply it? Thanks!
Heather
It is in a tube for people, so I guess it would be ointment. The liquid drops are too hard to get in their eyes. I asked the pharmacist for it. The vet told me to just swipe a little across her eyes, doesn’t matter if they close them, it gets in. Takes a couple of days to start working. Let me know if it works
Could Choupi’s family not afford the adoption fee and get him back? Just a thought.
Thank-you Andrea! he is getting groomed tomorrow so i will go to pharmacy and get some. It would be so great if it workes and he wouldn’t have “smelly leaky” eyes anymore!
I support Janet C idea: why couldn’t he go back home now?
When I had SOS MIOW, we often did “courtesy” vetting for people who couldn’t afford the full price on cats they had picked up as strays. The people paid us our cost for vetting and got to keep the cat they rescued.
Then again, perhaps Choupi’s family may not really want him back.
When Choupi was brought to a Vet (not Dr. Plasse, the Animatch Vet) after his accident, the family agreed to let Choupi go to a rescue. Animatch was contacted and we took Choupi. Surgery was done for Choupi (who is a fantastic dog), he recovered. and he’s been waiting for his furever home for several months. At no time, have we been contacted regarding Choupi. We do not judge, that was the family’s decision. Insofar as Animatch is concerned, Choupi is our responsibility—we accepted him with open arms.
On another note and not related to Choupi’s case. Yes, Vet fees can be very expensive, especially for surgeries, etc. However, many Vets will allow people to pay over time; most Vets really do not want to euthanize dogs if they can be helped. There are still many people who cannot afford the cost and that is extremely unfortunate. On the other hand, there are many who will not spend money on Vet fees. Animatch, like most rescues, has taken in dogs who have been terribly neglected (i.e. skin problems, ear infections) and their family will just not spend the money ... “after all, he’s just a dog”.
Just kind of glancing over these comments, but I do not agree with the last few that I am reading. a) I don’t think that ANIMATCH is in the business of covering med. costs, and returning the pets to their original owners (even if the family pays the adoption fee)....b) So let’s say CHOUPI goes back to his original owners and some OTHER med. expense comes up that they cannot afford, do they return him again to ANIMATCH or some other rescue? c) Has the family even expressed any interest in getting him back? I think that they had their chance…It really is not pleasant when you have to start dishing out bucks for a sick, injured, or aging pet….We’ve just dropped over $1000 on our pussy cat since December and I am anticipating more expenses within the next few days. Can I easily afford it? Not really….but we work it out, because Maggie is part of our family. In reality, the decision about how much money we are going to spend on our pet is a very, very personal choice. SOME of the questions SOME people might reflect upon would be:1) Can I afford it?, 2) What are the odds of a good outcome? 3) Is it worth it to spend so much money on an ANIMAL?? It can be a really difficult position to be in….I wish Choupi finds a good home soon, and that he has a few more great years ahead of him!
I believe that if Choupi’s family wanted him back they could easily have contacted ANIMATCH; clearly that is not the case. It is heartbreaking for me to see him still available and I think it is just because he is a quiet little soul…he wld be a really good companion to have near you. I wld love to be able to take him…makes me so sad. However, I do know that the good ppl @ ANIMATCH are looking after him very well…and thanks for that!
Well Choupi, you are next little one - I posted a comment on September 5th 2010…. how time flies - you are having fun with your friends but little one you should have your own furever family… you’ve been watching the coming and going of your friends yet you are left behind. When we adopted Q ( Mill Mum ) she was they guesstimated between 5-7 years of age…. she lived with us for 8 years before she crossed over. We had 8 golden-treasure filled years…. I don’t believe your age is the factor here ...like so many other furbabies that has stopped for a longer period of time; your special family just hasn’t find this site yet. Don’t give up hope - they are out there - sleep with this thought in mind tonite, being cuddled, held in the arms of your forever caregiver.
We cannot know how much Choupi’s family was willing or unwilling to do. Things are not always as they might look on the outside. I know a family that will tell you how much they love their dog. A while back they had another dog. He came down with some kind of problem with his neck that was being ignored that was probably caused by the way he would bolt after squirrels when he was tied out causing to back flip constantly. I suggested to this family many times that they should take him to the vet for treatment because he was clearly in pain all the time. This continued for well over six months. Eventually he came down with another, but much more obvious problem, an eye infection. Still no vet care! I offered some ideas about over the counter human eye infection preparations and helpful treatments that they could do to help his eye heal. His eyes got worse and worse over many months. They ended up putting the dog down explaining to their friends, who felt sorry for them “It was so sad but there was nothing we could do, he had terrible eyes and ended up blind so we had to have him put down.” They ended up with another dog within a week! To say the least I was very angry about the whole situation!!! If you met these people and their new dog you would never expect this type of behavior.
When I read and hear stories like this it makes me sad and angry. I try not to be judgmental, but is difficult because it is preventable. If you are not going to be a committed and responsible pet owner…don’t get one. It’s not enough that the dog is cute…the kids want a dog…it will be fun, etc…. .Bottom line is dogs do not ask for much but it is still a big responsibility (time, patience, spay, neuter, vet bills, etc) and comes with a lot of work. In return you get so much love, laughter and loyalty…but the owner must keep their end of the bargain. Before making the decision, be honest and not selfish and be sure you and your family are truly committed. If not, we will continue to hear heartbreaking stories and have animals suffer unnecessarily.
Choupi is at the Pitou Minou Pet Fair at Pointe-Claire Plaza today. Maybe ... just maybe ... it will be his lucky day!
I have a Shih tzu that was going to the Monteregie SPCA over 15 years ago. They phoned me to tell me he would be coming in as I had asked for a small dog. Thank God I got him before he went there. Nobody would have adopted him because he barked constantly. I knew in my heart he was for me. He was badly shaven but home he came. 15 years later I have spent over $1500 on a operation for a mass on his eye. He scratched constantly and bled over everything. He has a heart murmur and the vet said he might not make it but I went ahead after pondering for 3 months. I said even if he has 1-6 good months he cannot live like this. I am happy to day that 14 months later he is still around. Older, deafer, blinder, slower, less teeth but he is still around and happy. His walks outside are shorter now, he sleeps more but I still have him and you know what I don’t even miss that $1500 anymore. funny how life gets you in the heart. He is in his 16th year and I thank Helene from the SPCA in Monteregie for calling me back that September 1996 morning to tell me he was available. You know dogs are just kids with fur. I have two kids and 4 grandkids and 1 furbaby. Thank god for my Teddy. PS His name was Jappy in french because he barked so much but I thougt he looked like a brown teddy bear. God Bless our animals.
Happy easter Mr. Choupi…xoxo
To June: As long as my furbabies have a quality of life; they are by my side. I know exacltly what you are talking about when you mention vet care; we love our animals when they need medical attention; we manage… we’d do so for our own children- our furbabies are part of the family and in this household; they do not go without medical care nor without their grooming.
Maggie’s Mom : why don’t you report incident like this to your local SPCA… if a pet owner will not bring an animal to a Vet that is neglect and should be pointed out to the authorities.
Maybe Choupi’s pictures on Animatch do not do his justice with the teary eyes - I believe these pictures were when he first came into care I may be wrong but new pictures wouldn’t hurt.
My husband and I would love to adopt Choupi. How do we go about it? Also, we don’t have a car, so how would we get to your centre?
Thank you!
Good day Natasha,
If you would like to adopt, please go in the Dog Adoption Tab of this website and read/follow the Adoption Procedure. Everything is well described.
Once you will have filled in and submitted your adoption form, a volunteer will take a look at it. Please do not expect an absolute immediate response, all of our work is done by volunteers who do as much as they can but sometimes run out of time a little…so it may take a few days to get an answer :o) The volunteers will also explain to you how to get to the center.
Thanks and have a great evening!
Serina
Natasha;
If you are approved for adoption, don’t worry about getting to the center, i will try to help if i can!

Everyday miracles .... have a great life with your new family!!!
I am thrilled for this sweet little dog who’s been tugging at my heartstrings for months now. I think special thanks must go to Serina for working so hard on his rehabilitation.
Warmest congratulations to Choupi’s adoptive family!
I visited Choupi in his new home today. He lives with a retired teacher and family who will happily continue with his therapy started by the volunteers at Animatch. There were framed pictures of their last dog. Could have been Choupi’s twin! Choupi kept ‘four on the floor’ while I was there.
