A Yorkie-X Female named Bluebell

Bluebell is presently Adopted

Hey, Bluebell here and I am a puppy mill survivor.  I am about two years old and to the best of my knowledge, I am a Yorkie mix.  Now a lot of people who call Animatch wanting to adopt are all about cute!  For the love of dog, cute isn’t everything!  Humans can be pretty shallow, if you ask me.  Adopt me and I guarantee that you will probably not find another dog like me in the world.  I may not win “Best in Show” but I am truly original.  Now the reason I look like I just came out of the shower and I’m having a very bad hair day is because I’m on some heavy duty drops/cream for a really bad ear infection.  In puppy mills, dogs don’t see veterinarians.  In their eyes, ear infections don’t stop a dog from making puppies.  The flaps of my ears are now quite hard and misshapen (something else that makes me unique).  You see my ears bothered me so much that I kept shaking my head.  As my ears were shaken back and forth, tiny blood vessels in the ear flap ruptured, causing bleeding under the skin – or a hematoma.  As this went untreated my ears flaps are a little wonky.  Not to worry though, I am going to live a long and happy life and it won’t stop me from being the dog of your dreams.  I am still quite shy and a little nervous but once I am comfortable, I promise to be your cuddle bug.  So don’t pass me by just because I don’t fit into the “cute” dog mold.  I will like you for who you are on the inside, and that love will be unconditional. It’s only fair for you to do the same.  Please fill in the Adoption Form if you would like to adopt me.

Poor Bluebell.  Another puppy mill survivor with that look in her eye that says “I need love and I will give love unconditionally”.  What a story of her life so far.  There are only good things in your future now Bluebell.  Your ears will heal and the only time you will need to shake your head is when you have to give yourself a shake to realize how lucky you are to have been rescued by the great people of Animatch.  Good luck sweet Bluebell.

Bluebell, dearest your ears will feel better soon and your beauty shines through your luminescent eyes.  I will punch anyone on the nose that picks on you.  Your former owner is out of business, sweetie.  One mill down, 3 million more to go but it is so nice to know we got you all out.  Hats off to Rosie, Animatch, and Kiko for stepping up to the plate!

If only the Quebec government would get off its ass and do its job.  Maybe they could stop picking on waitresses making minimum wage by working on their feet all day and go after the black market profits made by these bastard millers and backyard breeders.

OH you little precious with such soft, sad eyes. What so-called humans do to defenseless animals for a few bucks makes me want to do bodily harm to them. I wish I had a place for this little one. But at least we know she’ll never again be abused and used.
I don’t understand WHY people are still buying mill puppies and rewarding scumbag millers. Aren’t there enough articles and warnings about this out there? Or are people buying mill puppies because “I want what I want”? Or rationalizing it to themselves by saying they’re rescuing a dog, when they are just perpetuating the misery?

Patricia, I would say all of these reasons and more.  The fact is most people know about puppy mills but don’t connect them with the stores that sell the puppies. I talk to people all the time that are so angry about puppy mills and what they read in the paper.  We can lament all we want how disgusting the human race is, but in reality its apathy and naivety that continue to allow things like mills to do their dirty business. They either assume the government is punishing them and closing them (not even close to the truth) or have no idea where the puppies are being sold.  They don’t make the connection with what they buy in stores because the stores and their clerks are not being honest and often tell people that the dogs are pure bred from respectable breeders.  They even give out false certificates that support that.  No store wants to say they are selling puppy mill puppies!  Kijiji sellers are equally dishonest.  Some are people like you and me who think it would be cute to sell puppies of their cute dog.  Or they want their kids to see puppies being born or they think it is a great way to make a few bucks while being a stay at home mom.  Others are just in it for the money and are small scale mills. Once a buyer sees the puppy, they are done for and buy the dog because they feel they are saving them.  PLUS Quebec millers export their puppies so unless we have laws governing the export of live animals that includes mill dogs, how do we stop it?

Finally, some people understand the problem but don’t know how to do address their protest or action within their comfort zone.

There is not one answer to your questions but in order to stop the mills we need to know with whom we need to address our action.  Different parts of the problem can be solved in different ways.  Go to nopuppymills and register if you want to find out how to be part of the solution.  Send letters to Kijiji, Lespacs, Craig’s List and other on-line media stores protesting against allowing ads that sell or give animals away; ask them to post a warning about puppy mills and encouraging people to contact rescues like Rosie and Kiko and Animatch.  Use your Facebook account to show your opinions on the subject.  Have everyday conversations with the people and bring the conversation around to dogs or cats, give them a few facts that make them think about the subject without overwhelming them or they shut down.

Good luck and keep us informed if you have any other ideas on how to action change.  Together we can make things happen.

Way to go Kat - it’s by voicing - educating - and directing our energy to the proper autorities ( !! ) hit them where it hurts - (no not there) in their pocket books.  We may not stop them completely but by opening eyes - pointing to where the horrors occurs - not purchasing from PetStore that do sell live animals…. eventually our government will open their eyes, introduce laws that are not just a slap on the wrist - laws that will match the suffering of those past and present mums and dads from Mills.

Anyone who thinks the government will do anything about the mills: Why should they when they are right there at the trough feeding off the suffering by collecting GST & PST for every $900 mixed breed mill puppy sold at the two petstores still peddling them. People need to know that there is no reputable breeder on the planet who would put their puppies in a petstore to be bought - and bred, and abused and dumped -  by anyone with a pocketful of cash.
I’m sorry to rant, but looking at this pitiful girl, and knowing there are uncounted others just like her out there just set me off.
    Thank you Animatch. You’re wonderful!

They certainly aren’t collecting the taxes on Kijiji or at flea markets…the government listens when we insist.  Everyone is yakking about those student protesters but guess what? If we did half of what they are doing, we would probably no longer have puppy mills in Quebec.  It took persistence and energy and organization but the government is now NEGOTIATING the tuition hikes with those students.  THAT’S power.  Saying things will not change is not the answer. We have to make it change.

I learned something from Bluebell’s story.  Out of the blue, my Brady started shaking his head.  I’ve had him for 3 years and he has never done that before - other than during play of course.  No sooner had he started to do this, than I read on Animatch about Bluebell and her ear problem.  I checked him and sure enough, he had some wax / dirt building up.  I had drops and ear-cleaner on hand, so we jumped right on it and I’m happy to say, he’s just fine.  This website not only helps the dogs in need of a home, it helps to keep educating us - even when we think we know what we’re doing.  Thanks again Animatch!

I’ve had a phone interview….I know that’s part of the process, and it’s not a guarantee I will have the privilege to adopt you; but I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I showed your picture to my Dad, when I was visiting, & the first thing he said was your eyes reminded him of my dear Clemmie. She passed way from my life a month ago. I feel the same. You won’t be Clemmie, that’s a good thing, because you are Bluebell…and your just as beautiful in my eyes.
