A Shepherd X Sheltie Male named Bamboo

Bamboo is presently Available for Adoption
Hey, Bamboo here and I’m back at the top! I protested .... there have to be some perks to being the dog who has been around the longest. Seriously, please take a look at all the dogs that are on the adoptees page and who have been here for a while. Don’t forget the large dogs too, we are just as important. Beulah, Simone, Bear, Hendrix have all been up for adoption far too long. By adopting one of us, you are making space for another deserving dog. Without your help, the future is bleak for some of these dogs who are waiting.
Update: Bamboo has made tremendous improvement over the time he has been with us at Animatch. He is still on medication – the minimal dose taken once a day. We feel that he may be on it indefinitely but this will be monitored as time goes on. Animatch is very willing to help Bamboo’s new family during the adjustment period. Bamboo now loves his crate and goes in very willingly. After all, he has his meals in his crate so only good things happen there. It is now his haven where he feels safe and secure. He has even been left loose at Animatch while he is not supervised and he did not destroy anything. Of course, much of his routine will have to remain the same when he goes to his new home. Certain behaviours will continue to be a “no-no”, i.e. following his human to the bathroom, giving him attention when he demands it. Although, Bamboo gets lots of play time with other dogs, he is lacking exercise in the form of long walks which will also stimulate his mind. Both breeds in his mix are working dogs (Sheltie and Shepherd), so he needs to be kept busy and to use his brain. Bamboo is ready to take the next step and go to his new home. If you are ready to commit to this amazing dog, he is more than willing to take make the move. Please fill in the adoption form if you would like to adopt Bamboo.
Bamboo, another familiar face to Animatch, was adopted in September 2010 when he was approximately 6 months old. Bamboo is a medium size dog (38 lbs. but could lose a pound or two) and he is a Shepherd x Sheltie mix. Bamboo was given up because his family felt that they could no longer cope with his separation anxiety.
Dogs like to be part of a group and being separated from their family causes some dogs, like Bamboo, considerable anxiety. Many dogs that are in a high state of anxiety will howl or bark, try to free them self by destroying whatever is in their way, and some will urinate or defecate. Dogs DO NOT do these things out of spite. Bamboo whose anxiety causes him to be destructive will need his behaviour to be modified; he needs to learn that it is okay for his guardian to go and that he will be safe and his human will return. Since Bamboo’s case is quite severe, and Animatch feels that he needs to be given the chance and the help needed to change, Bamboo is now on meds. Medication alone is not the answer, he needs behaviour modification. This is where his new family can help. There are many actions that need to be taken. Emotional farewells or greetings are out – they only increase the anxiety level. Giving in to demands of attention such as whimpering, nudging, dropping toys at your feet need to be a thing of the past. Bamboo needs to get used to being away from and out of sight of his new guardian even while his family is at home. Exercise is extremely important and Bamboo was not getting enough. Although it is not the cause of his anxiety, a dog full of pent up energy and anxious is not a good combination. Bamboo would love to be someone’s jogging or hiking partner.
Animatch is looking for an active, patient, and experienced guardian who is ready to work with Bamboo through this difficult time and who will not throw in the towel at the first sign of a problem. Bamboo wants to please, he just needs direction. Animatch and our Vet will work with Bamboo’s new family. Please fill in the Adoption Form if you would like to adopt Bamboo.

My knee-jerk reaction was “Oh, no, not again!” and “What now?” I read this story and was quite touched! How admirable and refreshing to “lay all the cards on the table”! This poor family probably went thru alot of hardships and this poor doggie needs alot, alot of special help and attention. Not a person who will adopt this dog will not have known of his issues / problems. There is no reason for his next home not to be his forever home! Good luck to you, Bamboo!
Yes, I have to say that Bamboo was in a good home. It was a difficult decision.
Shelties & German Shepherds are working dogs and need to be challenged. Lack of exercise and certain boredom are a mix for unbalanced behaviour in these animals.
Getting his needs fulfilled would go a long way to turning this handsome boy around. There are so many professionals out there that can help integrate a dog such as Bamboo into a new family’s routine. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but is often well worth the investment.
Good luck, Bamboo, the past does not define your future!
Separation Anxiety is tough - my adoptee , Luca (lab/border collie mix) has shredded the basement door frame 4 times in the last 3 years. H e also hates crates or confinement. He is on a low dose of meds, which has really helped. He was taken off it at one point after a long successful period, shredded a door, and emptied the fridge and freezer so I put him back on a week later. He also gets upset if I am away. Some people need meds all their lives and it is nothing to be ashamed of. Exercise is REALLY important - Luca trains for 1/2 marathons and loves it. He is my best running buddy. Behavior modification also helps hugely. Getting Luca attached to different people helped.. It is a huge challenge though and I would never criticize anyone who has tried to do this after my own experience. It is rewarding but sometimes exhausting (and expensive).
Bamboo looks like a sweetie - I hope someone with lots of energy and patience and who is in and out of the house frequently will be able to take on the challenge.
(Ps good comment about keeping him busy - bright working dogs need “intellectual” stufff! )
Bamboo looks like a sweetie
I have babysat Bamboo for his last owners for 8 hours a day several months. When he was with us, we found no need to medicate him. He is a kind and gentle dog who got along very well with my cat and my cockatiel. He is good with dogs as well as people. He is a very loving animal and if circumstances had allowed I would have taken him in a heartbeat. Bamboo was well loved and does not suffer from any abuse. He is a young energetic animal and trust when I say that he would be a wonderful addition to any family. The only thing he needs is to be helped to get over his separation anxiety. He is a wonderful dog you will not easily forget.
Thanks for your insight Sharon. You are right, he’s a great dog when people are around. We just have to get him to feel safe when he is alone—that’s the difficult part. It is not realistic to think that people who adopt will never leave him alone, although we are looking for a family who is not gone ALL day. We are hoping that with meds (temporarily) and some behaviour modification, Bamboo will overcome his fears. Animatch is still committed to finding this dog his forever home.
I agree with you Joanne and Sharon.
Hopefully someone out there that adopts Bamboo ,will be willing to do the effort it takes, patience and time (not 3 weeks, more like 3 months approx.) to wait on Bamboo to overcome his anxiety. Hopefully, this person/family will be willing to ALL participate to rehabilitae Bamboo. He needs a daily lunch time date if that someone works all day, and lots of DogToys scattered across the floor when he is left alone.
He is a smart dog…just needs a Good Leader.
Lori Baird, I admire you.
hey - how is Bamboo doing?
Much better ... you can take a look at updated bio. Bamboo is a work in progress but in the right home, he will be a great dog.
Love to hear that Bamboo is doing much better and is ready to be adopted.
It just shows how much Animatch volunteers are dedicated and determined to give a dog a better life. I can’t imagine that Bamboo was very happy when he was anxious so all their efforts teaching him to relax and to make positive associations has probably made him a much happier dog too. Way to go, Animatch!
Sounds like Bamboo has made wonderful progress if he can be left happily in a crate. Well done! I hope someone (who likes to walk/run!) will look at him soon. He is a nice size at 38 lbs and has lovely fur.
38 lbs?? That’s TWO Zoey’s! Wow, he looks bigger than that to me in the photos! But I have discovered that all the pics of the dogs make them look bigger than they really are! I guess the camera really does add 10 lbs! Hehe! Even my little Millie (Gaia), when I went to the Animatch Centre to meet her, based on her photo, I thought she would be bigger than she turned out to actually be in “real” life. I was PLEASANTLY surprised to see what a cute LITTLE doggie she was! Good luck Bamboo. I hope that your forever family will be running their hands through your lovely fur, REAL SOON!!!!
Say WHAT? 38 lbs = 1/2 a ZOEY!!! Math…it’s my strong suit!
How is Bamboo ? It is amazing how dogs keep progressing - Luca is now playing with my other dog ( I would prefer they did not do this at 6:00 AM beside my bed!) which he never did the first year or so. The first couple of months were tough, but I now have a very affectionate, active dog ...so if you have a bit of a flexible schedule and like to be active, take a look at Bamboo ( I just cant handle 3 dogs…!) . Sounds like he trains well, and a dog being able to spend some time in a crate really reduces your anxiety as an owner.
Has anyone ever thought of getting Bamboo a Thundershirt? I purchased one for my dog and it relaxed her instantly. I’m not saying it’s a cure-all, but coupled with everything else, it might help. Just a thought!
Hi Melissa - what’s a Thundershirt and how does it work?
I happen to be listening to a behaviorist on Sirius radio and hear about thundershirt for the first time. There is a website. www.thundershirt.com As Melissa says, might not be a cure-all but would be worth a try.
Hmmmmm, very interesting…thanks for sharing!
Bamboo is such a beautiful dog. I hope the medication and anxiety is not scaring people off too much. One of my dogs is on medication for separation anxiety but I wouldn’t change it for the world. He’s worth every second and penny!
Sounds like Bamboo is getting better by the day! It might take a little longer but you’ll find your forever family eventually. Not just any family, Animatch will find the PERFECT family
Thundershirts are a result of the insights of a behaviourist named Temple Grandin. She also provided the best model for group housing of animals. At Animatch there are many water stations. At night, many Kurunda beds.
There is a movie about Dr. Grandin’s extraordinary life, and her books are well worh reading.
I have been looking at Bamboo for a while now and looking at him, he reminds me of Lola (my adorable adoptee).
He looks like Lola who is doing very well.
I met this beautiful boy at the Hudson Pet Fair this past Saturday. He is so much smaller in person and a real sweetheart! I swear, if I could, I would take him in a second. You might have to wait a little longer but you’ll find your forever home and it will be perfect!
Hello,
I mentioned getting Bamboo a Thundershirt to see if it would help a few weeks ago. If the volunteers at Animatch are interested and willing to try it, I have an extra shirt that I purchased that turned out to be a bit large on my dog. It’s a size medium, which is supposed to fit dogs with a chest size between 18”-26” and weighing between 26 and 40 lbs ( I think Bamboo weighs 38lbs?). If someone would mesure Bamboo’s chest as indicated on Thundershirt’s website and the size is right, I would gladly donate it for him! Let me know. Melissa
I am currently fostering Bamboo, and would love to try the shirt. His chest is 25 inches, and he weighs 36 lbs. You can send us an e-mail thru “Contact us” and we can arrange to get the shirt. Bamboo is doing very well, and on an even lower dose of medicine. Great with my dogs, good in the car, good in his crate. A real treasure. Thank you for your offer.
Bamboo you have made it to the top of the list and you are so handsome! It’s wonderful to know that in the right hands you are coming into your full Zen potential. Hope to see your furever Zen family has finally found you and is enjoying you to the max.
I hope Bamboo gets the perfect family this Christmas, it will be sad if he doesn’t with such a beautiful face like his.
Over the years I have had the pleasure to share with life with somme wonderful dogs and yes some of them had seperation anxiety. With time and patience they do get over it and they make the most loyal of companion. They never want to leave your sight. Having another canine companion helps them tremendously in coping when you are not home.
Good luck Bamboo, I certainly hope your find a loving home soon and that someone discovers what a sweetheart you are!
Everytime I see Bamboo’s face (pretty much every day) and look at those eyes, so kind and full of devotion, I could cry. If I could have a big dog, he would be my pick. I really hope he finds a home soon, he seems like such a lovebug.
Fell bad for Bamboo he is never on triel and never reserved he dseserves to have a wonderfell family
I know what you mean Nicolas. I wish someone would take a chance on him. He is probably one of the best dogs anyone could ever have. I really hope to see the words On Trial for this guy soon..he deserves that.
Do any other situations cause Bamboo stress or anxiety? Are there any other health concerns he has? Hope he finds a home! We’ve been talking about another dog, and are just reviewing our options
! Is face just shows his longing for a furever home! Thankyou Animatch for keeping this boy and all the others happy and healthy!
It makes me so sad every day I come on the site, that Bamboo is still here :( I would take him in a second if I could. He’s so beautiful, even more so in person. I hope people aren’t scared off by the separation anxiety. He’s on such a small dose that I’m sure he could get over it with time and dedication. I pray every night that your forever home comes sooner rathe than later! Love you, Bamboo!
Hey Bamboo…one minute you’re on top and the next well, you’re somewhere else, and then somewhere else again!!! I am getting old, resistant to change, trying to get used to the new Randomly Rotating Adoptees!!! LOL
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this randomly rotating idea! Thumbs up to whoever thought of it. Keeps the fans on their toes! LOL
Ok, I obviously wrote that last comment before I started surfing the site. My head is spinning, Debbie, so I take one LOVE LOVE back.
I was so excited when Bamboo wasn’t at the top anymore, I thought his day had finally come! I know the perfect family is out there for you. Just have to wait a little longer <3
je suis très contente que Riley soit adoptée : cela prouve bien que l’anxiété de séparation se traite bien! Bamboo, cela donnera peut-être à quelqu’un le désir de t’adopter à ton tour…Qui peut résister à un tel regard ?
Can someone can give us an update on how Bambo is doing. I wish he could find a home soon, very soon. Good luck my friend xx
ohhhhh Bamboo every morning I am anxious to see on trial besides your name. The wait is long but when your family finds you it will be the best time of your life.! Hang in there little cutie
Same here, everyday I check and say ohhh Bamboo… But he’s waiting for just the right family to come along. Good luck Bamboo
I too keep checking here to see if he is on trial, he is such a handsome boy…..
Well, I guess it makes many of us then! He would be the perfect dog for me if I did not have my grey muzzle GSD… So I think he is the perfect dog for someone else. I just wish that person will show up soon!
Bamboo ..What a surprise when I went to ‘Meet & Greet ‘here you were .. your foster mommy has Taught you a few tricks..
‘‘give five ” .. ‘‘shot and play dead ‘’ and rolled on your back .. I was very Impressed .. Hope someone out there will come for you and give you all the love you deserve .
Dear animatch.
My family and I were about to adopt Bambou when his foster owner said he wasn’t good with kids. So it alot for a 9 years old girl to write about because I want to be a vet when I grow up. I am very sad and I fell in love with him at first sight when he was a puppy and I still do now. I would adopt him now but I have a cat. Her name is Charlie. I also I have a white shepherd. Her name is Summer. So yea I miss him a lot. Hope some one special loving and caring would adopt him and love him as much as I do thank you. bye bye!
Dear sweet Hailey, you sound like a wonderful little girl!Sorry that it is not meant to be for your family and Bamboo. You are lucky to be blessed with Charlie and Summer~ Don’t feel sad….hopefully, soon, Bamboo will find a home and you will be happy for him, because you love him so much. I’ll cross my fingers along with you. In the meantime, enjoy your two furbabies…you sound like a good little “mommy” and you’re only nine years old! Wow! Take care, Hailey!
Hello Bamboo! Back at the top again, hey ? Hope someone will fall for you very soon! Meanwhile, you seem to be in a very nice foster home! Hang in there boy! I am sorry for you, Hailey, but don’t worry, Bamboo is in very good hands!
I just don’t get why Bamboo is still not adopted! I LOVE BIG DOGS….(I have one small, and one big). Big dogs are like giant teddy bears. You can wrap your arms around them, and hug and squeeze and nuzzle and kiss them. Where, oh where, are Bamboo’s new guardians hiding? It doesn’t even seem possible that no one wants him!!!!! :(
Hailey: Sorry, but I don’t think anyone told your parents that Bamboo was not good with kids, especially not his foster Mom. Bamboo loves kids! He lived with children in his last family. Now we do recommend children over 8 as we do with all our dogs. But there was definitely some miscommunication on that one and we don’t want anyone to think that Bamboo is not good with children.
Hi there….
Hailey’s mom here. Just wanted to clarify tht we did try to adopt Bamboo back in 2010 and were told at the time that he wasn’t right for our family :( as my children were 7 and 5 at the time… We did think he was lovely and were all a little disappointed. It was suggested that we take Dante (lab/bernese x) a few months later, but unfortunately (and very fortunate for us), we had already adopted another rescue dog (Summer). However, we were so taken with Bamboo that we ofter check in. We’re all pulling for him and hope that his furever home will be found in the not too distant future. Keep up the good work Animatch… from your loyal followers.
Sorry, I also meant to thank Debbie and Viviane for the kind words towards my little girl. It meant a lot to her as it did to myself. You have a gentile heart
Thanks, Hailey’s Mom for letting us know that it was two years ago—now it makes sense. Just didn’t want to make it even more difficult for Bamboo to be adopted. Very happy that you went the adoption route and helped a dog. We are all hoping that Bamboo’s forever home is just around the corner. Bamboo, as well as some of our other adoptees who have been around for quite some time, are more than ready.
Bamboo is so cute that there will be someone for him. I’m sure that it will be soon. I cross my fingers for him, he deserves to find his forever home. I know that if this person is home most of the time Bamboo won’t have to be medicated. I don’t believe that a dog needs meds all his life. It is a beautiful dog and he looks intelligent. Love, attention, affection, exercises that’s what he needs!
Good luck Bamboo!
Yes bamboo .. Yes being first on the list has made you popular.. We all hope for you to have your permanent home .. We know that with your foster parent you are well looked after, even being taught tricks .. Good luck big boy;-)
Joanne, would you or someone else at Animatch consider writing a blog post about some of the “long-timers”? I can’t be the only one who is curious about what happens to them when they’ve been around a while. What are these ‘refuges’ that they go to? How do they adjust to the long wait?
Maybe we could update his age? Unless I’m wrong, but I believe by now he should be getting close to 2.5 yrs, or at least 2 yrs…? Maybe that could help, or at least maybe attract people that don’t want a dog that is too young… Just an idea.
I really wish Bamboo would find a home soon…. Best of luck to you buddy.
Fanny…..absolutely great observation!!! ....I agree with you. Anything that might help!
I met this sweet dude at the Plant Sale today. So friendly and so calm. He is actually smaller than he appears to be in the photos. Very soft fur and beautiful brown eyes! Kisses Bamboo….I would so love to celebrate your adoption~
