She was waiting for us to come to our senses

This is an update about Wellington (formerly Maddie).

Wellington joined our family on March 9th, 2011. We already had two other small dogs; Paddington, a 4 year old Maltese/Yorkie mix and Corduroy, a 3 year old Maltese/ShihTzu mix and we were in no way looking to add a third. She found us.

From the moment my husband and I were approved we knew Wellie was a part of our family. After speaking with one of the amazing volunteers at Animatch, I knew that this little girl was exactly like Paddington was at her age – a spunky little ball of energy that never stops moving.

She and Paddington and Corduroy are getting along really well and it’s been wonderful watching their relationships grow. When she wants to run, she plays with Paddy. When she wants to wrestle, she plays with Corduroy. She has been with me to several dog socials and is the sweetest little girl.

Having experienced the crazyness that was Paddington’s puppyhood, Thomas and I knew exactly what energy level we were in for. It turns out that Wellie is actually less energetic than Paddington was at her age. Additionally, she lacks the stamina that Paddy seems to have (we sometimes calls her the energizer bunny). Wellie is energetic in short bursts whereas Paddington just keeps on going.

Wellington continues to surprise us with her ability to adapt, and her good behaviour. She is excellent on leash (far better than Paddington and Corduroy are!!), is eager to learn, rides in her crate in the car without a peep, is gentle and loving and has assimilated into our lives quite well. In four short days she learned her name, sit, stay, leave it, wait, back up and is currently learning drop it.

We are still working on her house training and nipping, but she is coming along so well. Everyone loves her ears and colouring. Her favourite treats are bananas and canned pineapple and she has learned to sit and wait for her food until we say “ok” - and she is very good at it!

I haven’t told many people this but for the past while I’ve felt that there was a little soul out there searching for us, and now I know that it was Wellington.

She was just waiting for us to come to our senses.

If you want to read a weekly update on Wellie, you can read it on my Ottawa Dog Blog here: http://ottawadogblog.ca/index.php?s=wellington

Thanks for reading and thank you for helping Wellie find her way home smile
With love,
Liz, Thomas, Paddington, Corduroy and Wellington.
