Our Monster

Dear Animatch,
This is a long-overdue Monster update. I have attached a bunch of pictures so you can see firsthand: Monster is actually getting more furry and teddy-bear-like every day. We call him our “real live bear”.
We adopted Monster (aka Chili) this past August when he was about 2 and a half months old. Monster was one of 6 little yorkie/x-factor treasures that had been given up for adoption, along with their mom, Spicy. Although Monster was petrified on the long drive home, he adapted to his new home almost immediately. He loved his crate from day 1 and immediately took to sleeping on us and licking us every chance he got. He quickly became the core of our little family.
Monster is now 6 months old. He loves his toys (he has been known to take them out of the toy-basket and put them back one-by-one. Ok, sort of), licking our feet when we get out of the shower, attacking teddy bears (especially the ones that look like him), and antagonizing other dogs by charging towards them, realizing he is petrified, and then turning and running off in the other direction. Admittedly, he’s not perfect (although he comes pretty close). We’re still working on curbing biting (for all of 7 lbs, he can bite surprisingly hard) and the “occasional” bathroom accident. He puts absolutely everything in his mouth (edible or not). He eats the pee-pad in his crate. He has peed in places I don’t even want to talk about. Of course, this is nothing compared to how much he makes us laugh (multiple times per day). Monster is truly the best choice we ever made. I can hardly remember life without him.
Thank you so much Animatch. You are doing wonderful work!
Lots of love and Happy Holiday,
Rhonda, Adam and Monster

I loved seeing the photo of Monster. If he is anything like his sister, Gracie (Cayenne), he is well named, indeed! She is our little monster, and you have described her to a T. She, too, has bathroom accidents, but I am pretty sure she knows what she is doing, as she usually hides it. She, too, bites continuously, and puts everything and anything in his mouth. My grandkids built a “Thomas” train track around my Christmas tree, but we had to remove it. Gracie disassembled it, and tried to eat the track pieces! She runs so fast that she really aught to be doing agility, if only she’d learn to do just some of what she’s told. She attacks my poor, 13 1/2 year old Cocker Spaniel, who really does not want to play. She adores my two hyper grandkids, and some days I think all three of them should be put into crates! Still, she’s the cutest, cuddliest teddy bear ever, and we love her to death.
I am surprised to see that Monster has kept his black colour. Gracie’s grew out like a bad dye job, and she is now mostly orangey-beige, with just the tips of her ears and her tail keeping the dark colour. Everyone thinks she’s pretty cute.
Special thanks to Animatch, and especially Debbie, who chose Gracie for me.
OMG, Rhonda - he is sooooooo adorable and I love the new name! I thought feet licking after a shower was something original to my monkey girl, but I guess I was wrong. LOL
My Yorkie, Maeggi was a play biter too when she was a puppy. Here is what worked for me that might work for you. Whenever she started, I would use a chew toy to distract her from my hands and make it fun for her. Some people suggest using a high pitched “Ouch!” every time they bite, but sometimes she’d interpret it as a play sound (guess I wasn’t very good at it). She caught on pretty quick what was appropriate for putting in her mouth and it saved me and a lot of furniture from her biting! Her favorite game now is to fetch her squeaky toys and we play it every day.
Good luck and keep us posted!
