Buddy

Hi and bonjour!
Here’s the latest picture of our Buddy. A friend took this picture yesterday, 5 April 2010. He’s become the meet-and-greeter of all dogs in the dog park. The only way that I would lose him is if someone else has better treats than me in their pockets. That’s when I have to sometimes put him on leash and take him away from the most attractive pocket of yummy smells. I’m trying to make sure he stays slim and trim. Because he is a ‘been-there-done-that’ type of gentleman, he’s confident enough now that he just goes where the scent takes him. I am well trained in that, at these times, I sometimes actually have to back-track and remind him that I am the one he came with and that I truly appreciate and expect that he will come with me. He is big, but nobody is ever afraid of him because he is so calm and goes up to them, hoping for a treat, but settling for a pat. I love this dog!!!!

So nice to hear !! Thank you for sharing this picture with us
Lovely update. This dog always strikes me as a sweet gentle giant. Great ambassador to represent large dogs.
As volunteers we always love to have updates on our furry friends. As much as I miss taking Buddy (Patchy to M&G’s) spending time with him, & hugging him nothing touches my heart more than to know how very well loved he is by his new Mom. Thanks for giving him all that he truly deserves. Enjoy your precious time with him!!!
Yes, Thanks for continuing the updates. We all love to hear how our former adoptees are doing. Especially those like Buddy.
Buddy has a new title - My own personal Rock of Gibraltar. Kyra, the 6-year old hound/border that is his housemate, and whom we’ve had since she was about 4 months old, had to undergo emergency back surgery on the weekend, for a herniated disk. She’s on a six to eight week period of intense physio-therapy (my newest duties in dog care-ship!) With the amount of therapy required, I can only get Buddy to the dog park every other day. Long story short, I’ve taken him twice so far, where it was just him and me. He seems to truly enjoy the time that he and I share without the young brat with us, and has shown me a constant smile (I never used to be able to truly tell if a dog was smiling, until him, that is!), runs and plays with the other dogs, chases sticks, balls and frisbees and is the happiest dog there, by far. Yet, on the days where he’s stuck at home, since Kyra’s therapy takes up so much time and attention, he’s become my Rock of Gibraltar, staying calm, attentive and very patient. He still follows me everywhere, and I find myself making him do tricks to get treats as I work with Kyra during her exercises. The new routine for a couple of months is to take him every second day to the dog park so that he can run and have fun. My husband takes care of the Kyra-pup, who whines the entire time we’re gone. His assertion is that both dogs are attached to me by invisible velcro. Kyra knows where we’ve gone and is jealous, which is why she is now complaining at not being included. The fact that she can’t walk without her legs caving in from under her doesn’t seem to deter her from wanting to go! The time with me and Buddy by ourselves though, is a special treat for both Buddy and me. Is he great or what???!!!
Hi all.
I forgot to mention that a couple of weeks ago, Buddy had, due to his voracious appetite, eaten something in the park that she should not have. He was pretty sick for a few days. Because we weren’t sure what had caused him to be so ill, the bland diet not working and the fact that he’d lost quite a bit of weight (6 pounds over the last three months), I had a myriad of tests performed, luckily to discover that it was a case of his ever-sharp lab nose that led him to some unsavory wild dead road-kill type of thing. But, the point of this post is to say that this particular dog has affected me to the extent that, even though he’s been in our home for only a few short months (since late January), it feels like he’s been part of my life for ever and ever. I didn’t know what was wrong, and was worried beyond the beyond about what was happening to my Buddy. Doesn’t that say the most about a dog, a human, and the bond that can be created in a nanosecond of time?!
We are sorry to hear of your Kyra’s scare and hope that she is on her way to recovery. Kudos to you for taking care of her and becoming her physiotherapist! I’m sure it is very time consuming and I am glad that Buddy is there for support. I like to think of it as another way that he is making his contribution to the family. I bet he is loving his alone time with you though!!! The way you write about him is the exact kind of relationship that we wish for all of our dogs to have in their forever home. It makes me smile everytime I read your updates on Buddy. Please give him a big squeeze for me!!!
